It was a dark and stormy night in Northern New Jersey. The wind was blowing and the branches were cracking when all of a sudden a huge gust of wind blew through a 200 year old tree. There was a section of the tree that had termite damage and could not bear the impact of the forceful gust. The upper part of the tree fell to the ground just missing the electrical lines below, however the cable and telephone lines were not so lucky. They snapped and twisted, getting hung up on the 200 year old tree.
With the rain pouring down and no visibility, cable and phone companies would not be able to repair the damaged cables until the next day, leaving the entire community without hardwired television or telephones. Most people in the area reached for their cell phones to communicate with loved ones and the technically savvy people turned on their laptops and plugged in their broadband cell cards to watch live footage of the storm on the internet. Outside their windows the sky exploded with lightning while their floors shook from thunder, leaving a sleepless night for most. Since the electric stayed on, many did not know the damage that faced them in the morning due to loss of all phone lines.
Early the next morning a man got in his car and headed to his office just like he had done for the last 40 years, but this time he had a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach. As he was making the turn to where his building was located he noticed more than a dozen fire trucks and emergency personnel. They stopped him at the intersection and informed him that the road was closed due to a 4 alarm fire caused by the lightning. He knew in that instant the only major building on that block was his and immediately asked the police if it was indeed his building on fire. Sadly the police officer said yes. The man got out of his car and fell to his knees looking into the sky yelling, "Why me? Why me? I had a fire alarm! Why didn't it call my central station?" The police officer asked him if he had a standard alarm that transmitted over telephone lines and the man said yes. The officer then proceeded to tell him that the phone lines were knocked out due to the storm and there was no way to receive the call. He informed the man of another fire call last night but fortunately they were able to get there in there in time before the fire destroyed the building. Reason being they had a GSM radio (Global System for Mobile) to transmit their alarms. If only he had known this before his building would still be standing. The man promised himself from that day forward he would most certainly be equipped with GSM units in his next building
